Virtual CE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: I have both the V_CE client and server programs running, but it still won't connect, what is wrong?

A: Virtual CE should automatically connect if both sides are ready. If it does not connect after a few seconds, try running the CE side first and then exit and restart the PC client program.

Q: What are some of the uses of this program?

A: The majority of people use this program for doing presentations with their CE machines. Another popular use is taking screen shots of games (other screen capture programs typically can't handle it). People also like the ability to quickly input data into CE apps using their full size keyboard and mouse. Still others have found it useful for remote device management.

Q: Why go to the trouble of supporting all the different communication methods when ActiveSync does all the dirtywork for you?

A: ActiveSync does indeed create a convenient communication conduit using just about every method of device-to-PC communication. The problem is that ActiveSync can be slow.  Another reason is that the recent versions of ActiveSync have dropped support for nework connections.

Q: Virtual CE can't connect to my CE machine over a LAN/Internet, what could be wrong?

A: Virtual CE uses private TCP/IP port numbers to establish the connection. If you have a firewall between the PC and CE device, it can block access to these ports. VCE broadcasts on port 1899 and connects on port 1903.

Q: The Virtual CE server (v_remote) does not work on my CE device; when I try to connect, I get a black screen and the v_remote program exits. What is wrong?

A: I have tried to create generic code on the CE side to capture the video, but it may not work successfully on all machines without testing them individually. If your machine does not work properly, please let me know and I will arrange a way to correct the code to work on your machine.

Q: I try to paste from the clipboard (F11) and nothing happens. What is wrong?

A: Virtual CE supports pasting plain text from the PC's clipboard to the CE device. Graphics, RTF or custom data cannot be pasted.

Q: I am trying to connect with a serial connection, but the client software says that the port is unavailable. What is wrong?

A: Serial ports require exclusive access. If ActiveSync is running and is monitoring the serial ports or is connected via the serial ports it will not allow Virtual CE to use them. Either close ActiveSync or uncheck "serial support" in the ActiveSync configuration.

Q: How can I control multiple CE devices from a single PC?

A: Virtual CE allows multiple connection windows to be opened. Each window can control a separate device.  It is possible to have different communication methods used simultaneously by different windows as long as they are not attempting to use ports which require exclusive access such as Serial ports. Since ActiveSync only supports communicating with one device at a time, if this is the communication conduit used for Virtual CE, then only one device can be controlled at a time.
